Missing credits for CSN? How to meet the study-results requirement

How Sweden’s CSN study-results requirements work in 2026, how to check your missing credits, when student funding can resume and what counts as special circumstances.

Missing an assessment does not have to mean your whole degree is over. But you need to separate your course requirements from CSN's study-results requirements, calculate the right period and act on the decision you have actually received.

A recurring question in Sweden in August was whether missing credits from an earlier period have to be earned in the same course before CSN can approve new student funding. Read the Reddit discussion from August 2026.

The short answer: the requirement concerns credits, not the same subject

CSN, Sweden's student finance agency, says you can make up the shortfall in another subject or even another form of education. In some cases, that means moving from university to municipal adult education, known as komvux, to earn the required results. Once the school has reported them, CSN can reassess your application. Always read your own decision, which tells you how much you personally need to pass.

How CSN calculates results at university

According to CSN's current page on study results, the usual requirements are:

  • During your first 40 full-time weeks with student funding, you must pass 62.5 per cent.
  • After your first 40 full-time weeks, you must pass 75 per cent.
  • CSN converts part-time study into full-time weeks and rounds the results requirement down to the nearest whole number.

For example, if your latest decision covered 20 weeks of full-time study, the calculation is normally based on 30 higher-education credits. The percentage depends on how many full-time weeks of student funding you have already received. Use your decision or ask CSN rather than guessing from a friend's situation.

Do these things in order

  1. Open your latest decision or letter from CSN.
  2. Write down the period being assessed and the results you are missing.
  3. Check Ladok, the student records system, and ask your department when new results can be reported.
  4. Choose the quickest realistic way to achieve the equivalent results.
  5. Contact CSN if you change the form of education or need your credits converted.

When can payments begin?

On its page If your study results are insufficient, CSN describes two situations. If you meet the requirement within four weeks of the new study period starting, you can receive funding from the start of that period. If you meet it later, the earliest you can receive funding is the week after you satisfied the requirement.

The credits you make up cover the previous shortfall and cannot be counted again the next time CSN assesses new results.

Can you keep money you have already received?

Failing to meet the study-results requirement does not automatically mean you must repay funding for a period when you were registered and actually studying. But the situation may be different if you studied fewer credits than your decision covered and did not tell CSN. Check the decision and contact CSN if the amount of study changed.

If illness or something outside your control affected your studies

CSN can sometimes take special circumstances into account. You need to explain the connection between the event and the missing results, and usually provide supporting documentation. A period of illness approved by Försäkringskassan, Sweden's social insurance agency, may affect the results requirement being assessed.

What matters most before you plan next term

Find out the exact shortfall, when results can be reported and the week from which funding could begin. Then you can build a budget around an answer instead of a hope. This guide explains the rules in general; CSN makes the decision in your individual case.
